Brand Overview
A brand that has played a strategic role in the development of streetwear since the late '90s, Triple Five Soul has managed to become both financially successful and internationally recognized while at the same time maintaining an underground relevance. Steeped in a variety of underground cultures, from graffiti to various music sub-genres, Triple Five Soul has been a longstanding supporter of underground art, successfully maintaining ties to the brand's original roots.
Brand History
Founded in 1989 in New York City, Triple Five Soul opened its first shop on Ludlow street, debuting hand-sewn hoodies and velour suits. Coverage in Paper Magazine immediately followed, and the brand gained significant attention a year later when Fab 5 Freddy visited the Triple Five Soul store with Yo! MTV Raps.
In 1992, the brand opened a retail location in Los Angeles. One year later, a women's boutique called "Strictly for the Ladies," opened next door to the original Ludlow space. That year a retail store was also opened in London.
By 1995, Triple Five Soul had expanded its design goals, creating a variety of pants, including a newly launched denim line. Several changes would occur over the next few years, including the label's move out of Manhattan to Williamsburg.
In 1999, Triple Five Soul opened two stores in Japan, with a store in Hong Kong launching a year later. 1999 year also saw the arrival of the first in a series of memorable ad campaigns featuring notable underground musicians, including Mos Def, Mia Doi Todd, King Britt, and others. The "Define Your Soul" campaign would officially launch in 2001.
