Brand Overview
Spiewak is a New York-based active apparel brand that was formed over 100 years ago in Brooklyn by Isaac Spiewak.
Spiewak Uniform Workwear is committed to producing excellent gear that is so well-designed and manufactured that it can be seen on the streets of uptown Manhattan and the hangar at your local airport.
This sort of crossover appeal is a relatively recent occurrence in the history of this company, which began producing vests in 1904!
It is rare for a company to have crossover success and continue to do what it does best, and Spiewak has done so, maintaining their commitment to creating pieces that, while stylish, are at their heart functional pieces of workwear.
Men and women alike can enjoy the comfort and cut of Spiewak's clothing, and they most likely will be able to enjoy the comfort and cut for their lifetimes, as Spiewaks are notorious for their durability (The company began making all of the workwear for American Airlines in 1954, and has continued this practice until the present day).
Spiewak is definitely the only brand you can find at Barney's NYC and your local Army/Navy store!
Brand History
Spiewak's history is truly amazing. There are very few companies with over a century of history making wonderful clothing that are as relatively unknown as Spiewak.
- 1904: The company is founded by Polish immigrant Isaac Spiewak, producing sheepskin vests in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
- 1916: Spiewak produces wool coats, breeches, and jackets to keep American soldiers warm during WW1.
- 1917: Spiewak becomes a bit more modern, streamlining production methods to cut costs during the depression.
- 1941: Spiewak again joins the war effort, creating over one million bomber jackets, bomber flight suits, navy peacoats, and other military items for American troops.
- 1947: In a development that would foreshadow the events of the next fifty years, Spiewak's utilitarian gear becomes popular with the everyday consumer after the war ends.
- 1954: Spiewak begins manufacturing uniforms for the grounds crew at American Airlines, using some of their military design concepts.
- 1970: Spiewak "Snorkel" style parka debuts, and sells heavily throughout the seventies (Think Kenny's coat on South Park, in Blue with an Orange lining!)
- 1976: Spiewak begins exporting to Japan, a practice which has continued to this day, and has expanded to include all of Europe.
- 1995: Rap group Junior Mafia wears Spiewak clothing during a photo shoot for one of the first issues of The Source, beginning the explosion of Spiewak's technical workwear and other utilitarian workwear into the fashion market.
- 1997: Spiewak creates the outerwear for many urban outerwear brands.
Spiewak continues to make outerwear that is durable, stylish, and comfortable, and has not lost sight of the strength of the brand: quality gear that will take a beating and last.
