Brand Overview
Evisu is a Japanese apparel brand that specializes in premium denim. The brand's trademark is a sloping seagull logo found on both back pockets.
Brand History
Founded in 1988 by Hidehiko Yamane, a self-described tailor, the brand was originally called Evis, named after the Buddhist god of prosperity. The brand was originally inspired by Yamane's discovery of an American loom that could spin selvage denim.
Initially, Yamane painted the seagul logo on each piece, a process that allowed for the creation of only a dozen pieces per day. Throughout the early '80s and '90s, every pair of Evisu denim was made in Osaka from pure American cotton.
With the increased international demand for premium denim, and Evisu jeans in particular, in the late '90s, Evisu production moved to Europe in 1997. Since then, Evisu jeans have been made in Italy from Japanese denim. The brand is currently available in 50 Evisu stores in Japan and in over 400 Evisu locations internationally.
