A Nod to Great Design at a Fraction of the Price

8

CB2 has a wonderful nod to other "Solo" cup designs i have seen in the last year or two. However, this one is made of clear "chem lab" beaker glass rather than porcelain. It is handwash-able only, and a complete steal at $1.95. Why pay $40 or more a cup, when CB2 can hook you up for less than a tenth of that?

There's a lot of rip-offs making their way around the design world. One trip to Urban Outfitters or a store like Crate & Barrel shows dozens of examples of how inspired design by individual designers and DIY artists are being clipped by large corporations with tons of manufacturing resources but limited design strength. So, in response to the question you pose, I'd pay $40 a cup to: a) Show CB2 that I personally don't appreciate their theft of the idea and original design. b) To support the artist whose original idea should have center stage.

OK, I am biased since we stock Studio Qubus's version of this. But I bought some from CB2 just to compare, and they really are a piece of @#$%. They don't even really look like a dixie cup, the shape is all wrong, they are not light or well proportioned. Not even a good copy. I sent one to the designer (Maxim Velcovsky) so he could see it, and threw the others away. Thats the only good thing about the cost - i didn't feel bad about throwing them in the trash!

I understand where Andy and cooljames are coming from. No one likes design rip-offs. However, I was simply offering a cost-conscious alternative. Being that the original design patents are (to the best of my knowledge) owned by Solo, I don't think anyone should be too up in arms over this. Like all guerilla design, imitation is the greatest compliment. For example, look at Atypyk's coke spoon series.

I was not aware that Qubus made a very similar version. I was speaking to the "crushed" porcelain versions I have seen about.
